Genzyme in the UK
Our Treatment Areas
Multiple Sclerosis
What is multiple sclerosis (MS)?
In MS, the body's own immune system attacks the nerves in the brain so that they are not able to send messages properly, and this causes the disabilities associated with this condition. Symptoms can include loss of mobility, loss of sensation, vision defects, difficulty in bladder control, and loss of mental abilities. It is a disease that affects up to 100,000 people in the UK alone.
What is Genzyme’s contribution in the fight against MS?
It was recognised that one of our marketed products (which is currently used by doctors to treat a type of blood cancer) could have a role in the treatment of MS. Research is now underway to learn more about its effects and determine if it could be used in treating MS.
