Kent Genzyme Diagnostics UK is based on two sites at West Malling and Allington, near to Maidstone in Kent. Genzyme Diagnostics UK includes a Sales and Marketing group, Manufacturing Operations and a Research and Development Team The UK commercial group is responsible for the sales and marketing of the whole product line throughout the world outside of North and South America. It consists of a Sales and Marketing group of 14 people including support staff and sells either on an OEM basis or through its distributor network. The Sales and Marketing group is located in the West Malling Research Centre (WMRC). Also located at WMRC are the UK Diagnostics R&D group, the QC group, human resources and the Genzyme Ltd finance group. Around 60 people work in the Centre. The R&D group focuses on development of new Diagnostic Critical Raw Material products and the processes for their manufacture. Among the skills to be found in the UK R&D group are: fermentation development, protein biochemistry, monoclonal antibody technology, clinical chemistry and process development, scale up and transfer. Many of Genzyme Diagnostics’ Critical Raw Materials are manufactured in the UK at the Henry Blair Building (HBB) in Allington. The plant has capabilities for fermentation of recombinant microorganisms, monoclonal antibody production by cell culture, protein purification and freeze drying. In addition there is a facility for reagent manufacture with capabilities for 300l scale formulation, liquid filling, freeze drying in vials, human serum handling and custom labelling. The Quality Assurance, Logistics, Maintenance and Engineering departments are also based on this site. Around 75 people work in HBB, making a total of approximately 135 people working in the UK for Genzyme Diagnostics.
