What originally brought you to Genzyme?

The job advert described a job full of variety. I also believed that it would enable me to learn new skills and use the knowledge that I had gained in my university degree. So far the job hasn’t disappointed!!!

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

My job is full of challenges and no two days are the same. It is therefore hard to get bored and the customers I communicate with are always varied and interesting!

How have you grown your career within Genzyme?

I joined Genzyme straight from University in Oct 2003 as a Technical Marketing Scientist II. Since then I have learnt a lot about the commercial environment and the Diagnostics industry as a whole- experience that University can’t teach you! I have been promoted to Technical Scientist I.

What kind of specialised training or skills would someone need to do your job?

An appropriate science degree is essential. Good communication skills, teamwork, an understanding of the clinical diagnostic market, good troubleshooting skills and the ability to think around a problem.

What do you like most about your job?

The varied nature of my job keeps me interested. I enjoy the teamwork involved in bringing new products to market. The best part of this process for me in my job is getting to know the product and being able to pull out the main features and benefits that will enable us to sell the product.

What is most challenging about your job?

You never know what questions customers are going to ask and what complaints you are going to receive. This means that you could come into work with a plan of what you want to achieve that day and have that plan totally turned on it’s head because a customer needs your help.

What qualities do you have that you think helped get you where you are?

I am an organised person which helps when balancing all of the tasks that I have from projects teams and any customer requests I have received. I am able to communicate with lots of different people in different departments to get the information I require to pass to the customer. I am also committed and persistent so I see projects and customer issues through to satisfactory conclusions.

What are your career aspirations?

I enjoy working for Genzyme so I would like to progress my career within the commercial area in Genzyme.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career like yours?

Genzyme appreciates and rewards people who work hard. I would advise people to work hard, get a good degree and don’t forget to gain transferable skills whilst at university. Experience of the diagnostics market and some clinical laboratory experience would be helpful.

What do you like to do when you’re not at Genzyme?

I play badminton and I swim in an attempt to stay healthy! I also enjoy socializing with friends and family. I like to visit new places and meet new people.
