Jonathan What originally brought you to Genzyme? This was my first job post-university. Genzyme was a great choice for me to apply my skills in an industrial setting working for a dynamic, growing company. What keeps you motivated and inspired? The variety of tasks I complete, together with the degree of autonomy I enjoy to develop and execute my own projects. How have you grown your career within Genzyme? I have learnt many new skills and gained valuable process development experience, making me a more comprehensively-skilled team member. What kind of specialized training or skills would someone need to do your job? A degree in a scientific discipline would be an asset, although not an absolute requirement. Further to that, an interest in biochemistry would be of benefit. The ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively would be of critical importance. What do you like most about your job? The variety inherent as a result of a combination of individual and group projects. Also, being able to make a tangible difference to working practices as a result of my project results. What is most challenging about your job? As we are a multi-product manufacturing facility, there has been a large amount of information to learn and knowledge to acquire. What is a typical day like for you? I work 8am – 5pm. After checking emails I attend a daily production meeting where we will discuss the night shift production report to see how products are progressing in the plant. After that I will move onto project work, which may involve working individually or with colleagues. I also regularly assist with production processes. What qualities do you have that you think helped get you where you are? Tenacity, a willingness to encounter and learn from new experiences, and a fascination with scientific processes. What are your career aspirations? To become a leader in the biotechnology / life sciences industries by demonstrating success in people and project management, scientific process development and business development. What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career like yours? Work hard to gain the required scientific knowledge and also be able to demonstrate a problem-solving analytical ability. What do you like to do when you’re not at Genzyme? Play sports, study 20th century history and politics. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
