Angela What originally brought you to Genzyme? The nature of the work. I graduated with a Hons Degree in Biotechnology. This seemed like a great opportunity to put my academic experience into practice. What keeps you motivated and inspired? Genzyme’s work Ethic, good team atmosphere and fantastic career opportunities. I have experienced first hand how much the organisation recognizes and looks after their employees. Genzyme prides itself on patient care which motivates me to contribute to such an organization. How have you grown your career within Genzyme? I started at Genzyme as a QC Scientist II 6.5 years ago. I progressed from this position to a QC Scientist I, QC Supervisor and temporary Head of QC. I have now been appointed as the Reagents Manager (Small Scale Manufacturing). What kind of specialised training or skills would someone need to do your job? Definitely a Hons degree in a relevant Science subject. Experience in managing people, cGMP, ISO, Protein purification, running a production dept, budgeting/ forecasting, team motivation and various other people skills. And definitely the ability to organize, plan and manage time efficiently. What do you like most about your job? Every day is different and definitely a challenge. Working with highly motivated and enthusiastic people. Trouble shooting problems in the facility and with a particular process. Providing coaching for the newer members of the team/ company. What is most challenging about your job? The volume of work and ensuring the department is working towards continuous improvements but is efficient. What is a typical day like for you? No two days are the same but if I were to describe a general day… Start the day by making sure the team is happy with the plan and know what they are doing. Resolve any issues that may cause potential problems. Review any doc’s or Batch records that are complete. Attend a number of meetings that may range from financial to technical. Prepare various reports and doc’s where necessary. Investigate any issues that may have occurred E.g. bioburden in the facility, failure with a batch of product. What qualities do you have that you think helped get you where you are? Commitment to the job at hand and the company. Being able to communicate and work well with many different people. Being able to adapt to an ever changing environment and control varying levels of stress. What are your career aspirations? To continue to progress my career within the operations area of Genzyme. Perhaps use my experience in the US (And develop my own skills). What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career like yours? Work hard and show commitment. You have to enjoy what you are doing to ensure you succeed. Once you are employed within the company you aspired to work for look for opportunities to second to other departments you are interested in learning about, and develop your skills. Make sure this is within the scope of you chosen career path. Find a good mentor and learn from their experiences. Learn about the business and listen to those with experience. What do you like to do when you’re not at Genzyme? I love attending the gym, I find it relaxes me and is very therapeutic. Reading about spiritualism and developing my understanding of spiritualism through teachings from others. Dancing (salsa – when possible) Socialising and trying anything new.
